Soggy commute for Friday, flood warning in effect

Article tools

Long Island commuters are facing a soggy commute, as the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the area.

As much as 3 inches of rain are expected in Nassau and Suffolk, as well as the rest of the New York City area by the end of Friday.

The downpour, produced by a low pressure system, is also followed by much chillier temperatures. Highs will not make it past the mid-50s mark on Friday, 20 degrees lower that it was on balmy Thursday.

All these clouds have a silver lining, though. The latest weather forecast calls for a sunny or at least rain-free weekend.

Despite plenty of puddles and reduced visibility, the DOT says Long Island drivers are not facing any major incidents on the roadways. The usual congestion was reported on the LIE in Queens, between Kissena Boulevard and Woodhaven Avenue. The LIRR is not reporting any major delays, either.

Although LaGuardia, JFK and Long Island MacArthur airports are not reporting major departure holdups, bad weather is causing some incoming flights to LaGuardia to be delayed by an average of 1 hour and 45 minutes, the FAA says.

In the city, the Queens-bound E and V trains ran with delays because of signal problems at the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street Station. Due to a train with mechanical problems at the Canal Street Station, South Ferry-bound 1 trains ran on the express track between the 14th Street Station and the Chambers Street Station. The incident caused delays in the 1, 2 and 3 lines.
