New 'American Girl' advice book for girls 10 and older
A new book from American Girl called “The Care & Keeping of You 2: The Body Book for Older Girls” ($12.99) is out this month, focusing on the physical and emotional changes facing girls ages 10 and older.
Some topics featured in the paperback book include “Period basics,” “Tips for starting conversations with parents and other trusted adults” and “Mood and stress management.” It delves into specific areas such as shaving legs, uneven breast size, and the difference between deodorant and anti-perspirant. It features cartoon-like illustrations.
The book is a follow-up to the advice book “There Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls,” written in 1998, which has sold more than 3 million copies. It was first written for girls ages 8 to 12, but has been revised to deal specifically with ages 8 to 10.
The new book for older girls is written by pediatrician Cara Natterson, a mom of two and a graduate of Harvard and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Natterson says she wrote the book for parents as well as girls “in an effort to help you remember what it was like to go through puberty and what might be different for your child.”
