The Mega Millions jackpot Tuesday reached $636 million, the second-highest in U.S. lottery history -- and at least two people reportedly matched the winning numbers drawn Tuesday night.
One winning ticket was sold in Georgia and another in California, lottery officials said, according to The Associated Press. The winning numbers are: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and the Mega Ball 7.
Francisco Lopez, 18, an employee at the 7-Eleven on Ruland Road in Melville, said tickets were in high demand all day Tuesday. He guessed that every person who came into the store during his shift Tuesday bought at least one ticket.
"It's high, the jackpot -- it's high, so everybody wants to win," Lopez said.
He said every time the jackpot goes up to a couple of hundred million dollars, people flood into the store hoping to luck out and cash in.
"Everybody's looking for a ticket . . . " he said. "Some people just come for that."
Lopez said Tuesday someone spent $450 on tickets, while on Monday someone spent about $600. He thought both might be for office pools.
Latham Abboud, 30, and Nicole LaMacchia, 25, said they bought $5 worth of tickets Tuesday night. The couple is hoping to score some winnings to help pay for their wedding next summer.
"If there's more, maybe we'd get a house," LaMacchia said.
Tuesday's jackpot bumped twice since it was initially announced and was $20 million shy of the record high for a U.S. lottery jackpot.
With the odds of winning Mega only 1 in 259 million, the idea of the first $1 billion lottery jackpot in the United States was not far-fetched.
The record for the largest U.S. lottery jackpot is the $656 million Mega prize shared on March 30, 2012, by winners in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland.
