"New Year's Even, 1990. Joey was sober, and I thought that everything I worked so hard for had finally come together": A photo of Mary Jo and Joey Buttafuoco from Dec. 31, 1990, from the book "Getting It Through My Thick Skull," by Mary Jo Buttafuoco and published by HCI Books.

Mary Jo Buttafuoco
Mary Jo Buttafuoco became an unwilling celebrity after being shot by Wantagh native Amy Fisher, a 17-year-old senior at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, who was having an affair with Joey Buttafuoco, then 36. Though Mary Jo was shot in the face, the bullet -- still lodged near her spine -- did not enter her brain. She lost hearing in her right ear and has partial facial paralysis, but otherwise remains healthy.
