From left, mounted officer Garrett Clapp of Rockland County Sheriff's Mounted Unit rides Shields while officer Erica DeFilippo tacks Coughlin on Patrick Farm in Suffern. Coughlin is named after the late Sgt. John Coughlin of Pomona who served with the emergency services unit and died on Sept. 11, 2001. Shields came from the Westchester County mounted unit after it was disbanded due to budget cuts in 2010. Coughlin came from Newburgh's police horse unit after it was cut from the budget there in 2006. (Oct. 26, 2012)(Credit: Angela Gaul)
