Bowling Green looks for oldest campus tree
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — Officials at Bowling Green State University are searching for the oldest tree on campus.
The project is part of the school's plan to celebrate its centennial in 2010.
The search began with a look at archive photos to see what trees were on campus years ago. State forestry officials recently took core samples from a number of the older trees to age them.
Early data shows that more than a dozen trees on campus have been around for more than 100 years.
Back when the school was founded in 1910, part of the campus area was a city park and much of it was farmland.
Frank Schemenauer, a university horticulturist, says he hopes the project will give people a greater appreciation of campus trees.
