It's not news to cat lovers, but one California family’s pet proved that cats can also be a man’s -- or a boy’s -- best friend.

A May 13, 2014, surveillance video of a cat protecting a Jeremy, 4-year-old boy, from a vicious dog attack went viral when Roger Triantafilo, the boy’s father, uploaded it to YouTube Wednesday.

The video, titled “My Cat Saved My Son,” shows Jeremy riding a bike in front of his Bakersfield, Calif., home when a neighbor’s dog attacks him. The dog begins biting and dragging the boy, when suddenly the cat, Tara, pounces on the dog, chasing it away.

The video has so far been viewed more than 2.2 million times, and the number continues to climb.

In the YouTube post, Triantafilo says, “My cat defends my son during a vicious dog attack and runs the dog off before he can do additional damage. Thankfully, my son is fine!”

Jeremy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine, according to reports by ABC affiliate KERO.

The dog will be quarantined for 10 days and then euthanized, Bakersfield Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Grubbs told KERO.

Triantafilo commented on the YouTube video that Jeremy’s mother, Erica, who can be seen running away from the boy in the video after checking on him, made sure the dog did not return for a second attempt.

The California family was interviewed about their ordeal Thursday morning on the "Today" show.
