Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout April to help you plan a fun-filled day.

Alice in Wonderland at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Find out what happens when a girl named Alice falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world, based on the books by Lewis Carroll. Price: $15.

Dora the Explorer Live! Dora's Pirate Adventure at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore) on Saturday, April 6, 13 and 20 at 11 a.m., and Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m. Watch Dora come to life on stage and have a chance to meet the characters after the show. Price: $10.

Imago Theatre: ZooZoo at LIU Tilles Center (Route 25A, Brookville) on Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. Kids and adults alike will enjoy a mix of illusion and comedy such as penguins playing musical chairs, a cat trapped in a giant paper bag, hippos with insomnia and more. Recommended for kids ages 3 and up. Price: $14-$22.

Brady Rymer presents Jump Up, It's a Good Day! at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. Brady Rymer and the Little Band That could perform interactive songs from their CD; recommended for children ages 3 and up. Price: $4 with museum admission ($12), $10 theater only.

The Frog Prince at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Thursday, April 4 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. Set on the bayou, an African American waitress whose dreams of opening a restaurant are put on hold when she meets the Frog Prince. Price: $12 ($10 in advance).

Disney's Winnie the Pooh Kids at St. Joseph's School (25 Church St., Ronkonkoma) on Saturday, April 20 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A children's musical based on the adventures of everyone's favorite bear, Pooh. Price: $8.

Ah, Real Magic! at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip) on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. Join Gary Ferrar as he performs everything from stage illusions to close-up magic. Price: $12 ($10 in advance).

Cinderella: The Classic of All Fairy Tales at Patchogue Theatre for Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m. The most classic of all fairy tales comes to live on stage featuring Cinderella, her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, the ball, the handsome prince and of course, the fairy godmother. Price: $8-$21.

Jack and the Giant at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturday April 6, 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. A children's musical based on Benjamin Tabart's classic English folk tale, "The History of Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean." Find out what happens when Jack goes up the beanstalk. Price: $10.

Snow White at Ballet Long Island (1863 Pond Rd., Ronkonkoma) on Wednesday, April 17 at 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. Enjoy a ballet performance of this classic fairy tale. Price: $16, $6 children and seniors.

Treasure Island at Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. Follow the adventures of young Jamie and his crew of pirates (which will be chosen from the audience). Price: $10, $8, children under 3 are free.

Jim West's Dinosaurs at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. Puppeteer Jim West mixes the latest dinosaur facts with dino-puppet making ideas, classical music and more. Price: $18.

Martha Speaks at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. Based on the best-selling children's books, find out what happens when Martha, an ordinary dog, eats a bowl of alphabet soup. Price: $18.
