Md. revamping driver education program

FREDERICK, Md. - (AP) — Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administration says an overhaul of its driver education program is nearly complete.

Administrator John Kuo (kwoh) said Thursday that the agency implemented tougher standards for the state's more than 200 driving schools last summer, including criminal background checks for instructors.

In October, the MVA adopted a new curriculum endorsed by the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association. Instructional videos dating to the 1960s and '70s have been updated.

Kuo says a longer written test with a focus on defensive and courteous driving will also be introduced this year. And the agency is rolling out a new driving test that puts students on both the road and the closed courses where Maryland drivers are currently tested.
