Neb. university regents to mull stem-cell measure

LINCOLN, Neb. - LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The university's Board of Regents is expected to vote on a proposed resolution that would limit stem cell research at the university system's facilities.

The vote is expected Friday after the regents allow public comment on the resolution. That measure would limit research to only stem-cell lines approved under former President George W. Bush.

The resolution was drafted by four regents opposed to embryonic stem cell research. The resolution has its roots in a move earlier this year by President Obama to remove government funding restrictions on new stem cell lines that had been imposed by the Bush administration.

The resolution would need five votes from the 8-member board to pass. A split vote means the proposal fails.
