Lebanese Communist party supporters hold candles as they mourn the assassination of their former leader George Hawi a few hours after he was murdered in Beirut. Hawi, a politician strongly opposed to Syria's influence in Lebanon, was killed by an explosion under his seat as he was being driven through west Beirut. Lebanon's opposition figures quickly blamed Syrian agents and their allies in the Lebanese security services for the assassination.
