A Bronx man died early Friday after being crushed by a malfunctioning elevator in an apartment building on the Lower East Side, police said.

Authorities found Stephen Hewett Brown, 25, unconscious and suffering from severe body trauma shortly after midnight at 131 Broome St., the NYPD said.

He was transported to New York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

An FDNY spokesman said they received a call at 11:54 p.m. Thursday and were on the scene minutes later.

Brown’s relatives could not be reached for comment Friday.

According to news reports, Brown tried to exit the stalled elevator shortly before midnight when the car suddenly began to move again. He became pinned between the third-floor landing and the descending car, but managed to push a resident of the building out of harm’s way, the reports said.

Brown was in the building to attend a New Year’s Eve party, according to the reports.
