Mark Shand, brother of Camilla Parker Bowles, Britain's Duchess of Cornwall, died at a Manhattan hospital Wednesday after he fell and hit his head on a sidewalk.
Shand, 62, was found lying outside the Rose Bar in Gramercy Park at 3 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.
"It is with deep sadness that we have to confirm that the Duchess of Cornwall's brother, Mark Shand, has today passed away in New York. Mr. Shand died in hospital as a result of a serious head injury which he sustained during a fall last night," said a statement released Wednesday afternoon by Clarence House, the residence of Prince Charles and the duchess.
The statement described Shand as a "man of extraordinary vitality, a tireless campaigner and conservationist whose incredible work through the Elephant Family and beyond remained his focus right up until his death."
On Tuesday evening, Shand had attended Sotheby's Fabergé Big Egg Hunt auction, which raised $1.6 million for art programs in New York City public schools and for the Elephant Family, a conservation group that protects Asian elephants. After the auction, Shand went to an after-party at the Paramount Hotel's Diamond Horseshoe in the Theater District. From there he went to Rose Bar.
Shand was chairman of the Elephant Family.
