The first in line for mayoral succession took to the subway Friday morning with 600 condoms and a bunch of one-liners.

“Step up and get your condoms!

Safe sex for Valentine’s Day!” New York City Public Advocate Tish James shouted to commuters entering and exiting the Union Square station, handing out the prophylactics with Planned Parenthood volunteers.

“We got red condoms! We got blue condoms! Take your pick!”

James said she hoped the effort would help prevent sexually-transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies and educate commuters about staying healthy.

“A significant number of young people are suffering from syphilis, from gonorrhea, and from chlamydia and hepatitis,” she said.

By about 10:30 a.m., James was all out of condoms and the team packed up the table after a group photo and a final round of cheers.

James is planning on spending Valentine’s Day in Albany for a caucus meeting, she said, “and there’s nothing romantic about that.”
