The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.
VFW Post 6431 will be engulfed in the sweet smell of barbecue smoke this weekend as the sixth WilliePallooza gets under way.
The annual event, named for Long Island’s barbecue champion Will Breakstone, is a two-day affair. On Saturday, barbecuing and grilling classes will be given. From 2 to 5 p.m., the public will have a chance to judge a chili competition ($10 to taste all entries). At 7:30 p.m., there will be a screening of Kings of BBQ Barbecue Kuwait, a documentary by John Markus about five American pitmasters who stage a barbecue festival in Kuwait for thousands of U.S. soldiers.
Sunday is judgment: Certified judges will give out awards in the categories of ribs, chicken, pulled pork and brisket.
Throughout the weekend, there will be vendors selling barbecue and short films on barbecue and Southern culture. Bring a few cans for the Island Harvest food drive. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Get all the details at williepallooza.com.
The VFW Post is at 140 Wurz St., Brentwood.
