Jermaine Paul to perform at MLK celebration in Spring Valley
Harriman’s Jermaine Paul, season two winner of “The Voice,” will perform at The Unity Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. event in Spring Valley on Monday.
Paul grew up near the Martin Luther King Multi Purpose Center in Spring Valley, the organization co-sponsoring the celebration. Marc Pessin, a member of the center’s board of directors, said that the music star visited the center often as a young boy and continues to be in touch with the group on a regular basis.
“When he was on ‘The Voice,’ he said it was the charity of his choice,” Pessin said.
Paul performed at the center’s first MLK celebration two years ago, before he achieved fame on the reality TV show. Pessin said that Paul was a last-minute addition to this year’s lineup and that his participation is “his way of paying back the community and the center.”
Perhaps Paul will perform his new single because the singer recently tweeted he was excited to release the track soon. (His debut album is scheduled to come out sometime in 2013.)
In addition to Paul, the MLK event will feature a diverse roster of performers, including Jamcarr’s Ekklipse Steel Band, the Temple Beth Sholom Chorus and the Chiku Awali Dancers.
The MLK celebration will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Spring Valley Senior High School (361 E. Route 59, Spring Valley; 845-425-8910; martinlutherking-mpc.org). Pessin recommends people arrive early; because of the length of the program, the event will start promptly at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.
