A New York City police officer committed suicide while on duty in Queens Thursday night, a department spokesman said Friday.

The officer, 28, whose name has not been released, shot himself within the 111th Precinct, where he was assigned, said the spokesman, Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne.

Police did not say precisely where the shooting occurred or describe the circumstances.
