A woman who claims she was an underage sex-trafficking victim of wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein filed a defamation suit on Monday in Manhattan federal court against the daughter of the late British publishing magnate Robert Maxwell, socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.
The suit marks the latest chapter in the sensational allegations of Virginia Giuffre, formerly Virginia Roberts, who has claimed that Maxwell helped Epstein prostitute her and other girls to rich and powerful friends, including Britain's Prince Andrew.
The complaint alleges that Maxwell defamed Giuffre by labeling her a liar earlier this year. Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to a charge of soliciting prostitution in Florida and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Women who claim they were victimized as minors have said Maxwell got off easy because of his influence, and have alleged in a lawsuit in Florida that federal officials violated victims' rights laws by cutting a deal without notifying them.
A spokesman for Maxwell did not respond to an email seeking comment Monday. Prince Andrew has denied the accusations.
