Special ed placement bill's veto signatures double overnight
A petition calling for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to veto a special education placement bill has doubled in signatures overnight, surpassing the creator's goal of 500 supporters.
The bill would require a student's "home environment and family background" be considered in special education placements.
Steve White, of Spring Valley, an activist and a petitioner in a recent complaint against the school board majority, created the petition citing concerns regarding the costs of the bill to the East Ramapo School District, which has a large Orthodox and Hasidic community.
East Ramapo school board president Daniel Schwartz said Sunday that he supports the bill because cultural factors can be imperative in giving a child an appropriate education.
But, the bill has raised questions among educators throughout the state.
On Monday, Kelly Chiarella, director of the Westchester East Putnam Region PTA, said parents are organizing as well to call the governor's office in opposition. ""We just can't afford the unfunded mandate," Chiarella said. "It's going to cost every district too much money."
