Mona Hinton, widow of jazz bassist and photographer Milt
Hinton, has died.
Hinton died Saturday at a hospital after a long illness, said David Berger, a longtime family friend. She was 89.
Born Edmonia Clayton in Illinois in 1919, she met Milt Hinton at his grandmother's funeral in 1939. He was a musician who played with legends such as Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby. He was also a documentary photographer who took pictures of famous people he worked with.
The Hintons moved into their Tudor-style home in Addisleigh Park, St. Albans, Queens, in 1956. Among neighbors were jazzmen Count Basie, Mercer Ellington, as well as singer Lena Horne.
Mona Hinton traveled with her husband, kept track of finances and made travel arrangements. She was one of the few wives to travel with the Cab Calloway Orchestra in the 1940s and made sure band members had food and places to stay, Berger said. Milt Hinton died in 2000.
A funeral is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Hintons' church, St. Albans Congregational Church, 172-17 Linden Blvd.
