LI Future
But Long Island's prospects could be as bleak as our bust-town scenario if everyone here doesn't start talking about the future. And acting.
There's no guarantee that our future will be as good as our past. And there are troubling signs of storm clouds ahead. Young people are leaving and job growth is stagnant. Businesses say they can't attract new workers because housing prices are so high. Taxes continue to rise, but services are being cut back.
So this we launched a new project to start a conversation with Newsday's readers about what we all need to do to secure the future of Long Island.

The way to growth is through challenges
For too many Long Islanders, change is for the other guy. This kind of thinking places us on a path to economic and sociological paralysis. If a region does not evolve, it ultimately collapses from the weight of its own inertia.

Letters to editor on future of LI work, business
Last week we asked for your views on the future of work and business on Long Island. Here is a sample of the responses.

How does our Island grow? Fundamental changes are key to the future.
You've been living on Long Island and working at a decent job here for most of your life. You've always thought that your financial position was stable and things would continue to improve, slowly but predictably, and that setbacks would be temporary.

Affordable housing doesn't have to mean projects
Countless acres of trees have given their lives to enable this paper to carry news stories and editorials about the lack of affordable housing on Long Island. They died in a noble cause.

Expanding arts' appeal to LI's young patrons
Last Sunday, Newsday's editorial page opined that to keep young people on Long Island we need to ensure that there's a thriving cultural scene here. So how are we doing?
LI FUTURE
We'll pay for good schools But LIers want to cut taxes, too.
No one looks forward to paying taxes. But during the past few years, Long Islanders have become increasingly dissatisfied with the amount they pay in local property taxes. As a local resident, I feel the pinch, puzzling over the rate at which my property taxes rise each year.
LI FUTURE
Special districts mean more taxes
There's something peculiar about local government in New York.
