THE HOFSTRA DEBATE: Tonight, live from LI

After spending $3.5 million in preparations, laying 500,000 feet of wire and hooking up 1,400 phone lines, Hofstra University tonight will be the epicenter of what is shaping up to be the most important debate of the campaign season - John McCain vs. Barack Obama, Round 3.

About 3,000 press people have been credentialed for their final face-to-face matchup, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. McCain, down in the polls, has said that he will take the character fight directly to Obama, who has largely dismissed McCain's charges and has chosen instead to focus on the economy. The debate will focus on domestic issues, which polls show favor Obama.

Obama, who spent yesterday making debate preparations in Ohio, will arrive in the afternoon and also meet with advisers, his aides said.

So far, their two debates have produced few momentum-shifting exchanges - most polls show that Obama won both. Tonight, the two candidates will be seated at a table, providing a chance for interactions and exchanges that could grow pointed as the campaign enters its final stretch.

THE THIRD PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE IS TONIGHT AT 9 FROM THE DAVID S. MACK SPORTS AND EXHIBITION COMPLEX AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY IN HEMPSTEAD.
