Long Island state parks were brimming with capacity for the July Fourth holiday, leading officials to close off Sunken Meadow and other fields.
State parks regional director George Gorman Jr. said traffic is being turned away at Sunken Meadow. The crowd there, he expected, was 55,000 people -- "an outstanding crowd."
Robert Moses State Park has closed Fields 2, 3 and 5, Gorman said.
He estimated Jones Beach will see nearly 100,000 visitors on Thursday, and Fields 2 and 6 were filled to capacity. Traffic to Jones Beach, the agency said, was "moderate," but not "overwhelming."
Gorman said the turnout was consistent with past July Fourth holidays, but he added there was uncertainty earlier in the week about the figures, given gloomier weather forecasts.
