Travelers are dealing with delays and cancellations Monday at metro area airports, as overcast skies, rain and gusting winds -- coupled with bad weather elsewhere -- continue to wreak havoc on domestic and international flights.
LaGuardia, Kennedy, Newark-Liberty and Long Island-MacArthur airports are all reporting delays and cancellations, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
At LaGuardia, those delays are averaging about two hours, the FAA said.
At Newark, delays are averaging just under two hours while at Kennedy delays and cancellations are scattered. Two scheduled flights from Philadelphia to MacArthur have been canceled, according to the airport website, while two departures to Philadelphia also have been canceled. There were minor delays involving flights from Baltimore-Washington, D.C., West Palm Beach, Fla., and Tampa -- and flights to Orlando and Baltimore-Washington, D.C.
Flights into and out of LaGuardia have been hit hard.
During the 11 a.m. to noon travel window alone about two dozen departures were either delayed or have been canceled, according to an online flight status website. Almost 20 arriving flights also were affected.
Reported departure delays were as long as 105 minutes but dropped to 15 minutes by midafternoon as the precipitation cleared up a bit.
But arriving flights have been delayed up to 121 minutes, according to the FAA.
At Kennedy one flight to Toronto was canceled, records indicate. Arrival delays were just under an hour in the midafternoon, the FAA said.
Newark had been reporting departure delays of up to 144 minutes with arrival delays of more than two hours. By 2:30 p.m., departure delays were under 30 minutes while arrivals were still way behind schedule, the FAA said..
Canceled departures at LaGuardia involved flights to Denver, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia, Dallas and Boston.
Canceled departures at Newark involved flights to Philadelphia, Albany, Dallas, Burlington, Vt. and Hartford, Conn.
Bad weather is expected to affect air travel throughout the day and officials are advising all travelers to check with their airlines regarding possible delays and cancellations.
