Coastal storm may bring high winds, up to 3 inches of rain

A coastal storm is expected to hit Long Island late Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday, bringing gusty winds, dumping as much as 3 inches of rain and throwing a wrench into Thanksgiving travel plans, forecasters said.

Rain is expected to move in from the southwest and develop "right around the evening rush hour" on Tuesday, said Tim Morrin, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Long Islanders should expect light to moderate rain, which will get "occasionally heavy," particularly during the overnight hours. Winds Tuesday night will reach 20 mph up to 40 mph.

The weather service has issued a high wind watch, in effect from Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon.

Wind gusts could reach 50 mph to 60 mph overnight and peak at daybreak, said meteorologist Lauren Nash at the Upton office. Those gusts are typically seen with severe thunderstorms, she said.

They can down tree limbs and electrical wires, Nash said, and she warned Long Islanders to pin down or take in anything loose, such as "leftover Halloween or starting Christmas decorations."

The wind watch ends 2 p.m. Wednesday. Meteorologists have not yet issued a wind warning or advisory, but said that may change overnight as more data comes in.

"Unlike other parts of the country, there is no snow forecast, there's no ice," Morrin said. "That being said, a wind-driven rain will likely impact travel, commerce, aviation and folks traveling on our local highways."

The winds should die down and the rains taper off by Wednesday afternoon, meaning there is a potential for a dry Wednesday evening commute, Morrin said.
