Description:

Marty Coyle does not hail from the keep-it-simple school of ice-cream making. At Coyle's, the ice cream parlor that he and his wife, Janice, have owned since 1985, his bestselling flavor -- and his personal favorite -- is chocolate-raspberry truffle, whose demure name belies its elaborate composition: chocolate ice cream blended with raspberry sauce, and then laced with more raspberry sauce and punctuated with chocolate chunks. And that's restrained when compared to another top seller, monster mash: chocolate ice cream with broken waffle cones, caramel, peanut butter, crunch topping and marshmallow. Coyle's makes a textbook ice-cream soda, thanks to the step-by-step instructions the owner has posted behind the counter.

Hours:

Daily, noon to 10 p.m.; later on weekends
