Thunderstorms are causing flight delays averaging nearly two hours on arrivals at LaGuardia and Kennedy airports Thursday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The delays are the result of a storm front that moved into the area during the day. Meteorologist Dan Hofmann, of the National Weather Service in Upton, said the rain would persist throughout the evening as the front moves slowly over the area. Brief periods of heavy rain and thunder are expected overnight, he said, but no major flooding is anticipated.

Hofmann said the rain is expected to clear out by 6 a.m. and Friday should be "more sun than clouds," with highs in the lower 80s across Long Island.
