1019 Café in Northport has closed. The address-named strip mall eatery offered a Continental menu and was known for large portions at moderate prices. “We serve everything from hamburgers and sandwiches to filet mignon and lobster tails,” its website read.
Years ago, the restaurant spawned the short-lived 1019 Coffeehouse, which was situated across the road in the site that now hosts Cook’s...Read more »
The new J. Michaels Tuscan Steakhouse in Oyster Bay is as welcome as the original was in Northport. They're both excellent.
J. Michaels, Part II, is situated in the cozy site that for many years housed the Mill River Inn and, briefly, Serata.
It's a dining room dramatically different from the flashy, disco-ball-and-TVs Serata period, though vestiges remain. What definitely changed is...Read more »
Oktoberfest begins tomorrow in Munich. On Long Island, it's already here.
Head to Pumpernickels in Northport and Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square for a taste of German cuisine, one that's not available at many restaurants in Nassau and Suffolk.
At Pumpernickels, consider the herring, headcheese vinaigrette, pig's knuckle with sauerkraut, sauerbraten with potato dumplings, and the...Read more »
A scenic spot for a midday meal, not long ago, was the front porch of Copenhagen Bakery & Cafe, situated across from the harbor in Northport. Baker-owner Fleming Hansen recently did a major expansion and launched a menu of made-to-order breakfast, lunch and brunch dishes. Get in line, place your order; you’ll be given a number and your food will be brought out to you.
My choice was lump...Read more »
Memories of the now-closed Torcellos in East Northport always include its grand pasta e fagioli. The thick, rich savory prosciutto-enriched macaroni and bean soup, sprinkled with freshly grated Parmesan, warmed many on chilly days.
For now, that soup is out of reach. The pizza-pasta-parm restaurant was located in the Elwood Shopping Center on Jericho Turnpike....Read more »
In this week’s Newsday, Joan Reminick reviews Cook's Scratch Kitchen & Bakery in Northport, a counter-serve breakfast and lunch eatery where virtually everything is made from scratch. More importantly, the food is imaginative and, for the most part, exceedingly delicious.

Careful sourcing of ingredients and making as much as possible “from scratch” are the credos behind the new Cook’s Scratch Kitchen & Bakery in Northport. The counter-service eatery, which offers sit-down eating and lots of takeout options, sets its bar pretty high.
And, so far, seems to be achieving its aims. A case in point is the classic ham and egg breakfast sandwich. For starters,...Read more »
The Whale’s Tale, situated in Northport’s Brittania Marina, has opened for the season — and beyond. Owner Sosh Andriano said that a newly installed detachable glass enclosure keeps the chill winds away and may make it possible for the water-view place to stay open most of the year. The enclosure is stowed in summer, when plastic wind curtains are used on rainy days. For very hot days, a new misting...Read more »
It was a busy winter for Joe Celano, owner of La Casa Cafe at Crab Meadow Beach in Northport. Celano, along with two members of La Casa's crew, remodeled the interior of the restaurant without professional help. Now, said Celano, there’s a bigger waiting space as well as an expanded bar area with new hardwood floors. A 70-inch flat screen TV at the entryway plays a perpetual aquarium scene — unless...Read more »
Two brothers, Josh and Dave Cook, are the co-owners of the new Cook’s Scratch Kitchen & Bakery, which replaces 1014 Coffee House in Northport. Josh Cook said the place is both a cafe and bakery that serves breakfast and lunch. Just about everything served is made “from scratch.”
At the new Northport eatery, eggs and poultry are sourced from Raleigh's Poultry Farm in Kings Park. Chef...Read more »
