A fire weather watch will be in effect on Long Island Thursday, from morning through evening, because of predicted "high winds and low relative humidity," the National Weather Service said.

Northwest winds at 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, and relative humidity as low as 17 percent are in the forecast, the weather service said.

"A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur," the weather service said, adding that if a blaze starts it could spread rapidly.
