With Hurricane Sandy expected to bear down on the region beginning this weekend, the Long Island Power Authority is urging residents in Nassau and Suffolk counties to prepare for power outages that could last seven to 10 days. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone declared a state of emergency for the county on Saturday morning, and the Town of Islip ordered a mandatory evacuation for Fire Island to be completed by 2 p.m. Sunday.
