Armonk-based IBM fell one spot from last year, placing sixth among the 50 All-Stars and first among information and technology services companies. PepsiCo slipped five spots, ranking 37th on the 50 All-Stars list and third in consumer food products, behind Nestle and Unilever.
Meanwhile, MasterCard, based in Purchase, placed No. 3 in the consumer credit card and related services category behind No. 1 American Express and No. 2 Visa.
Facebook placed third in Internet services and retailing behind Google and Amazon.com and joined the 50 Most Admired list at No. 48. Facebook co-founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg was raised in Dobbs Ferry and another co-founder, Chris Hughes, has a residence in Putnam County.
Fortune's survey partner, Hay Group, compiled the top 50 list by asking 3,800 respondents to select the 10 companies they admired most from a list of companies that ranked in the top 25 percent of the 2012 survey and those that finished in the 20 percent of their industry.
The Most Admired list by industry was culled from the Fortune 1,000, the 1,000 largest U.S. companies based on revenue, and foreign companies in the Fortune Global 500 with revenue of at least $10 billion. From that pool, Hay chose the 15 largest for each industry and 10 largest for each U.S. industry, a total of 687 companies.
Hay asked directors, executives and analysts to rate companies in their industry.
The listing appears in Fortune magazine's March 18 issue.
