John Anderson, 1980
A Republican congressman from Ilinois, John Anderson ran for president as a Republican 1980. A moderate, he gathered a following against more conservative candidates Ronald Reagan and George Bush.
After respectable showings in the Northeast, however, Anderson gave up his dreams of the GOP nomination - but not his White House dreams. He then ran as an independent.
He stayed in the race through November, attracting 7 percent of the national vote on Election Day.
