Awards won by Lauren Terrazzano

Newsday staff writer Lauren Terrazzano yesterday received a special honor from the Newswomen's Club of New York - which only once before in its 85-year history has bestowed the prize.

Terrazzano was honored for her column, "Life, with Cancer," an account of her own experiences with cancer as well as those of others grappling with the disease. In a letter to Terrazzano, the club's president, Jeanne King, wrote: "Your columns not only inform and inspire cancer patients but also provide insight and understanding for their families and friends."

In her column, which has reached readers worldwide, Terrazzano has described the stress of the disease on a marriage, slammed a tobacco company for marketing to young women, and lamented the inappropriate comments of well-meaning friends.

Terrazzano has won a 2007 Excellence in Journalism award from the Society of the Silurians, and the 2007 Joanie Award from the Joan Scarangello Foundation to Conquer Lung Cancer.

The Newswomen's Club has awarded a prize for outstanding achievement just once before in 1982, to Nan Robertson of The New York Times for her first-person story on toxic shock. It subsequently won a Pulitzer Prize
