Editorial: Andrew Cuomo should support storm training standards
When Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo delivers his State of the State address on Wednesday, he plans to discuss recommendations from two post-Sandy commissions on storm readiness. Long Islanders should listen especially for talk about the need for a strategic fuel reserve, backup generators at gasoline stations and a better emergency management training program. That last item is absolutely crucial. Our population of 2.8 million relies on a patchwork of 275 small, balkanized, local governments for most of its rescue and recovery work. There's much to be said for first-responders who know their turf as only local residents can. But there's still more to be said for standardized training programs, regular drills and tightly coordinated disaster procedures in the face of another storm like Sandy. New ideas are welcome.
