$100 million -- That's the estimated cost to modernize the Belmont Park spur of the Long Island Rail Road's Hempstead line. The station, with its wooden platform and deep steps, is so old that the track switch is still thrown by hand. Service is limited to racing days and then only a hundred or so passengers use it, except on Stakes day. A new station with year-round operation, a pedestrian pathway and bus service to nearby communities would greatly improve public transit in southwest Nassau County.
