500 -- That's roughly the number of homeless families in Suffolk County. Happily, County Executive Steve Bellone said Friday that the family of Samantha Garvey, an Intel science competition semifinalist, will no longer be among them. The family has two members working, but needed emergency shelter. Now they'll live in a county-owned home in Bay Shore. But the Department of Social Services doesn't get to rest. It must keep doing what it always does: Move 30 to 40 families a month from shelters into permanent housing.
