I'm not a member of the National Rifle Association, nor do I have an obsession with guns, but I'm a supporter of the Second Amendment and law-abiding gun ownership ["Gun control derailed," News, April 18].

Thankfully, members of the Senate saw through the baseless fear tactics of those on the far left. This bill and many other recent so-called gun control laws have nothing to do with actually making this country any safer, they're only about government control of law-abiding citizens.

Criminals are never going to submit to background checks. They will only get their weapons illegally, so why punish those who already submit to rigorous background checks? Furthermore, additional background checks would not have prevented any of this country's mass shootings; nor will they prevent any future shootings.

So will the gun-control people insist we now require background checks to buy a pressure cooker ["Marathon bombing wanted," News, April 19]?
