Letter: Catholic Charities, gov't funding

The letter "Ayn Rand can coexist with Catholics" [Sept. 11] stated that "The Catholics who feed, clothe and shelter the defenseless are volunteers who also do not require the government's help."

This statement could not be less factual. While Catholic Charities is the second-largest social service provider in the United States, only surpassed by the federal government itself, about $2 billion of its annual budget comes from the federal government.

Please don't tell us that the good works of Catholic Charities would exist to any real extent if the Faith-Based Initiatives Office didn't shovel taxpayers' money into its activities.
