NRA should stand for Nothing Reasonable Allowed ["Gun buyback nets 330 weapons," News, Feb. 17]. This country professes to abhor bullies, and yet we have allowed the National Rifle Association to bulldoze us.

What is at stake in the gun control debate is not a question of freedom, but an issue of sanity. In fact this has become a test of civilization itself. The NRA continues to insist upon complete gun freedom and seems unwilling to hear or think or care about other perspectives. Even the horrific tragedy at Newtown does not move them.

A diverse society necessitates compromise. Freedom is a wonderful concept, but not freedom that jeopardizes a rational and safe society.
