Court decisions in favor of various utilities and against special sanitary districts in Nassau County was just plain wrong [“Paying more cash to remove trash,” News, Dec. 14]. The door has now been opened for the possibility of a la carte taxation.
Previously, if you owned a piece of property, you paid all of the taxes unless you were a tax-exempt organization. Now the court is opening the door to the idea that if you don’t get the service, you don’t need to pay. The fallout from this could be catastrophic to the homeowners in New York State.
Why pay school taxes if you don’t have any children going to school? I’ll take my own garbage to the dump rather than pay sanitary district taxes. I’ll tell the fire department to let my house burn rather than pay fire district taxes. How far could this go?
This decision needs to be appealed.
