The Town of Oyster Bay is discussing overriding the 2 percent tax cap ["Spending, taxes defended," News, Feb. 27].

Let's keep any tax increase to the 2 percent maximum instead of further burdening the taxpayers here. The town should try to maintain the same budget for the cost of government and use the 2 percent raise, if needed, for Sandy relief if the federal aid doesn't come through as expected.

Raising taxes more than 2 percent to offset one-time storm expenses would increase the new baseline for future tax increases, and residents would pay it for years to come.
