"Assign essays on passions" [IMHO, Dec. 10], written by a student, should be read by all teachers and serious-minded curriculum designers.
Assigning essays that pertain to students' passions should also be greatly expanded to include meaningful reading material that is relevant to today's world.
Can't-miss topics should certainly include the world of work, describing in detail the unlimited and exciting career opportunities available upon graduation. Wouldn't the world be happier and more peaceful if everyone were fully engaged in the right careers?
Let's keep Shakespeare and Dickens in the plan books, while also turning our young onto an exciting future.
