We have all heard that as Rome burned, Nero fiddled. Updating this to 2016, we now have the story that as Puerto Rico and Miami came under the threat of the Zika virus, the Republicans in Congress were fiddling and enjoying their vacations [“Playing politics with our health,” Opinion, Aug. 7].

In February, President Barack Obama asked Congress to approve $1.9 billion to combat the Zika virus. By not approving these funds, Republicans appear not to care about the country’s citizens — other than their special interest groups, which they take care of very well.

When a person is elected to federal office, he or she must look after the interests of all citizens of the United States, no matter where they live.
