Letter: Gun problem's beyond mentally ill

The point Newsday makes concerning the mentally ill and access to weapons is well taken ["These controls demand action," Editorial, Sept. 18]. But the problem of gun violence is not restricted to people with mental problems.

Doctors know that most mental patients are not violent. So the gun problem is much larger than the one you explored.

Americans have been sold a bill of goods by the National Rifle Association. Gun ownership is now akin to a religious devotion.
