I am writing to voice my support for the resolution before the Suffolk County Legislature calling for a voter referendum on merging the offices of the county comptroller and county treasurer ["Bellone revises job merger," News, July 23].

It is appalling that certain legislators seem committed to voting against every measure of County Executive Steve Bellone's reform agenda and now think they know better than the Suffolk County taxpayers. Republican legislators are stuck in the old patronage-job mindset.

Let's give Suffolk County residents the chance to decide the future of county government structures.
