Schools on Long Island should open the week before Labor Day ["Storm streak could spell trouble for schools," News, Feb. 14]. The weather during the last week of August is not nearly as nice as in June. In August, students already would have been off nine weeks and would be ready to go back.
Then you would have extra snow days built in without having to take away much-needed vacation during the school year. If it were done this way, parents would not have to worry about canceling vacation plans for Christmas break, February break or spring break.
