Here’s a suggestion for curbing gun violence in America: Any person convicted of using a firearm in committing a felony should receive an additional, nationally mandated sentence of 15 years (or more) to be served after the penalty for the primary offense [“Obama shifts debate on guns,” Editorial, Jan. 7].

Under no circumstances could this additional sentence be shortened by parole. That might make a person think twice before using a firearm in anger or to commit a felony.
