The mayor estimates that the project would bring more than 12,000 construction jobs and 7,100 permanent jobs, not to mention thousands of units of new housing. There would be new retail stores, restaurants and a hotel.
I was at Citi Field for a game, and I saw firsthand the condition of the area, which at least needs better-paved streets. I have also read there is a need for improved sewer and drainage.
There is no doubt that the Queens unemployed badly need jobs. These people are our neighbors, friends and relatives. I hope this project goes through.
