I ran against Peter J. Schmitt in the 1995 Republican primary and general election (I was on the ballot as the Independence Party candidate) ["Nassau Lawmaker Schmitt Dies at 62," News, Oct. 3].

Schmitt was an honorable adversary in both elections, and a good man who ran a clean campaign. As the 12th District legislator, he was a bulldog who fought for his constituents. Voters could ask for no more.
