LETTERS: Unlicensed drivers, terror trial, greed...

Driver in fatal crash

should be jailed

Regarding "Family seeks answers" [News, Nov. 16]: I cannot believe that the driver convicted in the death of Stephen Harrington in a head-on crash would even be offered community service as restitution.

If someone is caught driving with a suspended license, even once, it becomes obvious that he or she cannot be released on his or her own recognizance. Herbert Guillaume should be doing time, as anyone caught driving with a suspended license should be. A fine should be levied that is severe enough to pay for the additional manpower needed to enforce a stepped-up traffic enforcement program.

Enforcement of traffic laws on Long Island has become a joke. No one travels the 55 mph speed limit, at least 20 percent of the drivers you see are talking on cell phones, and most do not stop at a red light before making the permitted right turn.

Until New York State starts enforcing the traffic laws, these sad scenarios will continue.

How will they ever

find 12 jurors?

Trying to find 12 New York City prospective jurors without an opinion in the case of the 9/11 terrorists trial will eventually require a change in venue.

But then, where in the United States is the government going to find 12 unopinionated people?

Follow the spirit

of the law

Does anyone think that the recent financial meltdown has put an end to greed in our country? Well then I have a bridge I would like to sell them.

We are living in a how-can-I-get-around-this? society. No sooner do elected officials pass a law than some companies and people will ask, how can I get around this?

We should live by the spirit of the law - what was its intent?

BayshoreHealth care

by task force

Americans should get used to task force decisions like the one that recommended a reduction of mammograms for women ["Findings on mammogram spark debate," News, Nov. 18].

The government will look at cost-cutting and measures of effectiveness to control the cost of health care. It's not what you want, but what the folks in Washington want.

That's what "public option" and "single payer" are really all about.
